Aptos
Aptos (APT) is a modern blockchain platform focused on scalability, security, and user-friendliness, launched in 2022. It was founded by former Meta (formerly Facebook) employees Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, who were involved in the Diem project, formerly known as Libra. After the Diem project ended, they decided to continue developing blockchain technologies under the name Aptos.
Aptos uses the unique Move programming language, which was originally developed by Meta. Move is designed to be secure and efficient for implementing smart contracts. The Aptos blockchain is capable of processing up to 150,000 transactions per second (TPS) thanks to a technology called Block-STM, which is a parallel execution that allows transactions to be processed in parallel and their subsequent validation. This technology ensures that unsuccessful transactions do not slow down the entire system, which significantly increases its efficiency and scalability.
APT, the native cryptocurrency of the Aptos network, is used for transaction fees, staking, and network administration. Staking allows token holders to participate in the network consensus and earn rewards. Aptos uses a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism with a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) variant, which ensures a high level of network security and resilience.
The Aptos project has received significant support from major investors, including venture capital firms such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Multicoin Capital, Tiger Global, and Binance Labs. This support has enabled rapid infrastructure development and the implementation of key partnerships, such as working with Google Cloud to launch a validator for Aptos and partnering with MoonPay for fiat on-ramp integration.
Aptos is also actively involved in the Web3 and gaming industries. For example, a collaboration with Korean AAA game studio NPIXEL led to the development of Gran Saga: Unlimited, which uses NFTs to secure ownership of game assets. Another major partnership is with NBC Universal to promote the film Renfield through a Web3 game that includes interactive elements and NFTs.
Despite its relatively young age, Aptos has already garnered significant attention and built an ecosystem of over 30 decentralized applications (DApps), including DeFi protocols such as Thala and Econia Labs. Thala is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that provides liquidity and supports the growth of the DeFi ecosystem on the Aptos platform.
