Ethereum
Ethereum is a decentralized open-source blockchain platform that enables the creation and operation of smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps). It was first introduced in 2013 by programmer Vitalik Buterin and officially launched in 2015. Ethereum has become the second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization after Bitcoin.
One of the key features of Ethereum is its ability to support smart contracts, which allow for the automation and decentralization of many processes without the need for intermediaries. Ethereum uses its own cryptocurrency called Ether (ETH), which is used to pay for transaction fees and computing resources on the platform.
Ethereum underwent a major upgrade known as “The Merge” in September 2022, when it switched from the original Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to the more energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS). This transition reduced the energy consumption of the network by 99% and allowed users to stake their ETH, thereby securing the network while earning rewards.
Ethereum differs from Bitcoin not only in its functionality but also in its philosophy. While Bitcoin is often seen as digital gold and a store of value, Ethereum seeks to create a global platform for decentralized applications. Due to its flexibility and wide range of uses, Ethereum is often used for DeFi (decentralized finance), NFT (non-fungible tokens), and many other innovative technologies.
Ethereum is also known for its robust community of developers who are constantly working to improve the platform. For example, the EIP-1559 update, which was introduced in 2021, changed the way transaction fees are calculated and introduced a mechanism for burning portions of fees, which contributes to deflationary pressure on the value of ETH.
Overall, Ethereum is a revolutionary technology platform that is changing the way applications are built and operated, offering a wide range of possibilities for developers, enterprises, and individual users.
