Tether
Tether (USDT) is one of the most popular stablecoins, a cryptocurrency pegged to the value of a traditional currency, the U.S. dollar. It was launched in 2014 by Tether Limited Inc. with the aim of providing stable value in an otherwise volatile world of cryptocurrencies. Tether claims that each USDT issued is fully backed by reserves of cash and cash equivalents, ensuring that the value of one USDT is always equal to one U.S. dollar.
Tether is often used as a hedge against volatility in the cryptocurrency markets. Investors can move their funds into USDT during periods of high volatility without having to convert their cryptocurrencies into fiat currencies. This process allows for fast and cheap transactions between different exchanges and is particularly popular with traders who want to minimize the risk of losses caused by fluctuations in the value of other cryptocurrencies.
Since its inception, Tether has become the most widely used stablecoin on the market. In 2023, Tether reached a total supply of 22.75 billion USDT, reflecting the growing demand for stablecoins. USDT is available on several blockchain platforms, including Ethereum, Tron, and Algorand, ensuring its wide availability and flexibility in use.
Tether has also faced several controversies, particularly regarding the transparency of its reserves. In the past, the company has been accused of under-funding its issued tokens, leading to several lawsuits and fines. In 2021, Tether paid a $41 million fine to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for inaccurately claiming to be under-funding its reserves. Despite this, the company has managed to retain the trust of a large portion of the cryptocurrency community and continues to grow.
Tether is constantly striving to improve its transparency and credibility. The company regularly publishes reports on its reserves and works with regulators to ensure compliance. Additionally, Tether is expanding its activities beyond cryptocurrencies, such as investing in renewable energy and Bitcoin mining in Uruguay.
