Uniswap
Uniswap (UNI) is a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Ethereum blockchain that enables peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading without the need for a centralized intermediary. The platform was created by Hayden Adams and launched in November 2018. Uniswap uses an automated market maker (AMM) model that uses smart contracts to automate the trading process and provide liquidity.
Uniswap allows users to trade ERC-20 tokens directly from their cryptocurrency wallets, ensuring a high level of security and control over their funds. Every trade on Uniswap involves the exchange of tokens within liquidity pools that are funded by users called liquidity providers (LPs). These liquidity providers earn rewards from transaction fees that range from 0.01% to 1%, depending on the volatility of the pairs being traded.
UNI is Uniswap’s native cryptocurrency, which was introduced in September 2020 as a governance token. This means that UNI holders can vote on key decisions regarding the development and direction of the platform. Approximately 60% of the total UNI token supply was distributed to the community, while the rest was split between the team and investors.
Uniswap v3, launched in May 2021, brought several improvements, including concentrated liquidity, which allows liquidity providers to centralize their capital into specific price ranges. This improvement increases capital efficiency by up to 400x compared to Uniswap v2. Version v3 also offers a flexible fee structure and better accuracy in providing liquidity.
Uniswap is known for its transparency and openness. The platform code is open-source and available to the public on GitHub. The Uniswap team is actively working with the community to further develop the platform, which includes the upcoming version of Uniswap v4. This version promises to reduce gas costs and introduce new features such as dynamic fees and on-chain limit orders.
Uniswap has become one of the largest and most popular DEXs due to its simplicity, security, and innovative features. The platform supports thousands of trading pairs and offers users access to new and rapidly developing projects within the Ethereum ecosystem.
